The Origin of the Name Kediri, It's in the Kwak Inscription to the Manusuk Sima Procession

Kediri is an area in East Java and is located 130 kilometers southwest of Surabaya. The origin of the name Kediri also has numerous performances and numerous meanings. Some argue that the name Kediri comes from the word'kedi'which means' barren'or a woman who doesn't have her period.

According to the sanctioned website of Kediri Regency,kedirikab.go.id, the meaning of'kedi' according to Wojo Wasito's Old Javanese wordbook is a midwife or shaman. In the poppet play, Sang Arjuno disguised himself as a cotillion schoolteacher in the Wirata country named Kedi Wkantolo. When associated with the name of the character Dewi Kilisuci who meditated in Selongmangleng Cave, the meaning of'kedi'itself refers to the meaning of' holy'or wadad.

Also the word kediri comes from the word' tone'which means adeg, andhiri, attend or be king in the Javanese language Jumenengan.

There are several eulogies that mention the name Kediri, one of which is the Ceker Necrology. In the Ceker Necrology it's written,"Sri Maharaja Masuk Ri Siminaniring Bhuwi Kadiri"which if interpreted is'the king has returned'.

In ancient times, the Kediri area was a large area called the Kingdom of Medang which was also led by King Airlangga. The king came from the islet of Bali and came the King of Medang after marrying the son of the King of Medang.

Prabu Airlangga was a religious figure and when he was old he wanted to come a hermit. So, the royal throne was handed over to the son of the empress, who was named Dyah Sangmawijaya.

But Dyah refused because he preferred to be a hermit like his father.

Prabu Airlangga eventually gave the throne to the son of his doxy. He has two sons, videlicet Raden Jayanagara and Raden Jayengrana. Prabu was confused and eventually to be fair, he asked Empu Baradha for help to divide the Medang Kingdom into two corridor for his two sons.

Eventually, Empu Baradha flew with a flagon containing water to be poured from space right in the middle of the Medang Kingdom. Miraculously, the soil exposed to the water from the flagon turned into a swash now known as the Brantas River. Latterly, the Medang Kingdom is now divided into two regions bounded by the Brantas River.

Prabu Airlangga handed over the two corridor of the Medang Kingdom to his two sons. The eastern part was handed over to Raden Jayengrana who was given the name of the Kingdom of Jenggala. While the western part of the swash was given to Raden Jayanagara who was given the name of the Kingdom of Kadiri or which is now known as Kediri.
